What is the Frontline Knowledge Explorer (FKx)

The Frontline Knowledge Explorer is an exciting initiative to share YOUR valuable first hand experience of working on climate change adaptation with fellow practitioners, decision makers, and others around the world.

Topics

FKx 1: The linkages between disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation

This was formally launched at the CBA Conference in Dhaka, Bangladesh, 18-24 February 2009 and online 'invitations' were distributed through the weADAPT, Eldis, IDRC CCAA and UNDP ALM mailing lists. The period for concerted contributions was originally between the 19 February and 27 March, which was extended to 3 April, but of course the wiki page remains open for editing for people who wish to engage around this topic!

FKx 2: The use of climate science information in making adaptation decisions

This is currently being discussed with partners and preparations are being made to open it up for contributions in July. If we get enough involvement we are thinking of using the material to prepare a joint publication for the World Climate Conference in September and COP 15 in December.

FKx is an experiment in the co-production of knowledge by reflecting on our collective experiences in an open and collaborative way.

Everyone is welcome!

Background and Rationale

Responding to climate change requires new ways of thinking and doing. The Frontline Knowledge Explorer has evolved from a meeting of climate change knowledge service providers committed to developing new ways of working together and with others to meet the challenges of climate change.

We want to explore:

  • how we might go about generating knowledge together through reflecting on our collective experiences and thinking; and
  • what might be generated by doing this.

How to take part

  • to contribute you must first register as a weADAPT user (for free registration click on the 'Request Access' link in the nagivation box on the top left of the screen).
  • A beginner's guide to the wiki is available here
  • for any additional help, queries, suggestions please email info@wikiadapt.org
  • editing on the wiki does require a stable internet connection, if this isn't the case for you why not work in Open Office, save the text as an HTML document, and then copy it into the wiki when you are online.
  • depending on the number of people that join in with this experiment there is a chance you might experience the odd editing conflict if someone is active on the same section of the article as you are at the same time, please do your best not to log out in frustration never to return again, but rather try contributing to a different section in the interim and try again later (try using the edit link next to each sub-heading, rather than the edit tab at the top of the page)

What happens next?

  • a general 'tidy up' will be conducted as necessary at the end of each day, aimed at keeping the page manageable for people to work on (in terms of length, focus, direction, etc.), responsibility for doing this will be on a rotational basis amongst the coordinating team (although volunteers are also welcome).
  • after a set period of time (as indicated specifically for each FKx version) various static products (pdf and printed) will be developed out of this material using the editorial capacity within the partner organisations involved; all contributors will be credited, and the wiki will remain open for any further editing.
  • the process of undertaking this experiment is being documented throughout, any major editorial changes will be logged, please add your comments on the discussion page (click tab at the top of this page)
